Deployment of a Renewable Energy-Assisted Hybrid Energy Storage System in Antarctica

As part of the Turkish Antarctic Expedition – 8, field activities associated with the TUBITAK-funded project Development of an Energy Storage System for Polar Conditions were conducted on Horseshoe Island, Antarctica.

The project, led by Huseyin Ayhan Yavasoglu with Berke Ogulcan Parlak participating as a scholarship holder, involved the development of a renewable energy-assisted hybrid energy storage system suitable for the challenging environmental conditions of polar regions.

The system, consisting of photovoltaic panels, a wind turbine, and battery-based energy storage units, was physically installed on Horseshoe Island and experimentally tested under real environmental conditions. The project also involved investigating the energy consumption profiles of mobile systems and developing experimental testing and data acquisition infrastructure for long-term system performance monitoring.
